Sappho: The Poetess

Edinburgh 2026

This is the untold story of Sappho – poetess, queer icon, and history's first great songwriter. Torn from the woman she loves and forced into a marriage she never wanted, Sappho fights to reclaim her voice and her lost love – learning the heavy price the world demands of those who defy its rules. Guitar in hand and lyrics sharp as flames, she returns – part oracle, part rock star – in a musical memoir of women who dare to love, to dream, and to create in defiance of the world. This will be a stripped-back version.

This is an archived listing from the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Sappho: The Poetess is by DEM, listed under Musicals and Opera in the Fringe programme. It plays at Shedinburgh @ Assembly Checkpoint, 2 Bristo Place, EH1 1EY, 13 August to 14 August.
